Here is (again) an explanation of points and scoring.  *I didn't really explain points the first time around.*

Points are determined by standing (in score) for the day and how many people have played.  You can't get a higher amount (in points) than the number of people who have played…though your score can be considerably lower depending on where you finished and how badly you did for that day's quiz.

Scoring:

Scores are determined by how many you answered correctly and your time (in seconds).  The maximum possible is 1,000 (nobody will ever score this).  Each answer is worth 100 points (10 X 100 = 1,000).  The number wrong is multiplied by 100 and added to the number of seconds taken to play.  For example, if you get two wrong it's minus 200, and if you took 100 seconds to play, it's minus 300 (when added to the number wrong) for a score of 700 (2 wrong (-200) added to -100 seconds = -300; 1,000 - 300 = 700).  By the way, half seconds ARE counted (but not shown), so if you finish with the same time, but one of you is listed higher…that's why.

Anyway, that's the way the game is scored.  

You can check out the overall standings for the month by clicking the "Standings" button.  The top 10 scores for the day and the month are displayed.
