Garrett Mendal, like most Coruscant natives, could be said to be one of those that didn't consider himself to be from Coruscant. His parents hailed from Corellia, they came to the Republic Capital for a good working oppurtunity and made their living in Corelliatown. His mother ran a restaurant and pub while his father ran an engineering firm, they lived well, in the upper middle class, such as it was, almost never seeing the light of day on the planet. He was born in 34 BBE, followed three years later by his sister Kiera. They were precocious children, sometimes leading their parents to tearing their own hair out as they got into trouble.
When he was eight, the Clone Wars began. For three years it seemed to effect his family little. There was talk from the soap box. Some his mother and father seemed to agree with, some they didn't. Then came the Battle of Coruscant. The Invisible Hand caused massive damage to the region of the planet Garrett lived. His mother's restaurant was in the wrong zone, she was crushed. It didn't matter how deep under the skyline she was, when a capital ship crashes, gravity takes over. Their home, their father's firm was more out of the way. Trapped for hours, days, but not weeks, damage control and rescue teams were able to get them all out before they starved.
Ten years later his father shipped him off to the Corellia system, registering him in their biggest University, followed three years later by his sister. Living with an engineer for most of their lives, they'd both developed a knack for numbers, but they went different directions in specializations. Garrett stuck with the pure theory of an education in Mathematics where Kiera favored the world of Finance.
Garrett took a strange turn in his life after graduation and enlisted in the Imperial Military. After basic training, the intelligence community tapped him for intelligence training due to the analytical benefits of his education. They didn't stop there. They trained him for field work at redacted. A world of theft, disinformation, confidence games, false identities. He could wear them like a glove.
Garrett was on Corellia when he heard of the destruction of Alderaan. It was something of a gutshot that happened when he was working in a Cor-Sec office as a law enforcement liason. His task was to crack the Rebel supply routes in the nearby systems. Not a lot of work got done that day by anyone. Most stood or sat in the station, listening, watching, reading news on the situation. What little there was. What little was allowed out. It wasn't exactly hidden from the public, in fact it was all but shouted from the mountaintops. But questions weren't answered either. Speculation was everywhere, speculation was all there was. The Death Star. He couldn't help but sigh in relief when he heard of the Battle at Yavin some time later.
Three years later Garrett was assigned to the Coruscant Domestic Task Force. Specifically, he was assigned to Organized Crime. In a sense, the syndicates their task force dealt with were worlds unto themselves once you looked at the entire organization. Syndicates like Black Sun. He took on a deep cover role of a mid-level independant fixer. They had problems that needed solutions. On world or off, and he was on the list of people they could call. While he still fed findings back to Imperial Intelligence, he was largely cut off, fending for himself. While many intelligence agents manage to reach a level of independance in their careers, deep cover left him on his own and outside the chain of command for years.
His world turned upside down, almost literally, when the New Republic took Coruscant from the Empire. He was still in deep cover, and had developed a lucrative and highly independant business of his own on the side thanks to the hands off method the Intelligence Community had as long as he kept them apprised of his findings. The Fall of Coruscant left him flailing about almost desperately trying to find a safe place to hide amidst it all as his world fell apart around him. As he hid out in one of his safehouses, he sliced into the Intelligence Community Network, a part of it anyway, and dropped a spike. Useless information. All theoretically, logically tied back to him. Names. Birthdays. Timelines. Descriptions. Extraneous information to misdirect New Republic Intelligence and let him come in from the cold on his own terms.
The Criminal Underworld was still there. It wasn't going anywhere. It was a problem that would still have to be handled no matter who was running things. As the NRI sifted through the Imperial Intelligence's networks, he cleaned up loose ends for his cover as a fixer. He certainly didn't want an organization like Black Sun finding out who he really was, and he had the time before NRI could make their way to him. Instead, he went to them. There was an expected days on end in a debriefing room with the NRI agent as he told them what he'd been doing for the past years. Just what, and how. They asked for, then demanded his sources and his contacts, what he actually knew of the backbone of the criminal networks. He clamped up, giving them nothing, demanding something for something. The agent left, the new Coruscant station chief returned. A job offer. They'd turned Imperial agents often enough, this need not be anything new or especially unique, he said. Garrett accepted. In a twisted joke, his call sign over military networks was Turn Coat, and he was given a simulated rank of Sergeant(Alliance Army) should intelligence operations involve military personnel. They refused to affirm the rank mostly because thanks to the spike he droppped in the networks they could never quite confirm or deny his identity. But the information he gave them was solid, so they trusted him.
During Grand Admiral Thrawn's Campaign, Bilbringi was targeted. Why? That was beyond Garrett's pay grade. He had his guesses, but he was to have no part of the actual operation. He was a part of Operation False Flag, a small but integral part of the larger Operation Draw. His intelligence team was inserted into Tangrene. Ostensibly, they were to scout and report back on the major government installations of the planet. Something was to go wrong, and their cover break, and they were to make a desperate escape, just one sign pointing to Tangrene as a target by the New Republic. The operation went off, some would describe, without a hitch, but the bait was not taken.
One year after the Jedi Praxeum was established on Yavin IV, Garrett retired from New Republic Intelligence, but maintained his clearence as a contractor. Their arrangement is simple, and has remained largely unchanged to this day. Occasionally they meet with him, and give him a task. He figures out how to do it. It gives them a level of deniability should that certain type of operation go completely sideways. Otherwise, he mostly takes bounties for the private sector and criminal underworld. For five years, a decent living, for one who can play off his reputation as a fixer. He is known for protecting the people he works for as much as the people he gets information from. Once a contract is accepted, he is your man until the terms are met.
34 BBE - Born on Coruscant.
31 BBE - Sister born on Coruscant.
26 BBE - The Clone Wars begins.
23 BBE - The Clone Wars ends. Battle of Coruscant. Mother killed in destruction caused by battle. Damage control and rescue crews manage to dig Garrett out with his father and sister before they starve.
16 BBE - Education at the University of Corellia, majored in Mathematics.
12 BBE - Enlists in military, is tapped by the Intelligence Community. There's a not so well known facility on redacted that trains a good many of the Imperial Intelligence Community's field agents.
4 BBE - Destruction of Alderaan. Battle of Yavin. Liasing with Cor-Sec to crack the supply rings of the Rebel Alliance in the local systems.
1 BBE - Battle of Hoth. Assigned to domestic and internal concerns. Worked on a task force on Coruscant to gather intelligence on the greater criminal organizations. Worked deep cover as a fixer for supplying some of their more illegal endeavors.
0 ABE - Battle of Endor. Still in deep cover as a fixer on based on Coruscant.
3 ABE - New Republic Captures Coruscant. If the Battle of Endor is where the Empire lost the momentum, the Fall of Coruscant is where they lost the Galactic Civil War, even if they didn't realize it, and still had a lot of hardware to fight with. He who controls Coruscant, controls the galaxy. Garrett, a field agent focused on the criminal underworld, internal, and domestic threats as opposed to the Rebellion or other external threats, had little difficulty shifting his loyalty to the Republic. The Hutts were still there. Black Sun was still there. For his team, it mattered little who actually ran the government. Isaard's con game made it easier. In a twisted joke, New Republic Intelligence gave him the call sign Turn Coat.
5 ABE - Thrawn Crisis. Learned the hard way Thrawn just can't be conned.
7 ABE - Jedi Praxeum established. While not directly consequential to Garrett's life or work, it is interesting and of note when training of people that have a knack for ferreting out deception and lying is begun.
8 ABE - Garrett retires and holds a clearance in the New Republic Intelligence Community and takes freelance jobs with them for a fair price. The arrangement is simple. They tell him what they need done, he figures out how to do it. It provides them a level of deniability for that certain type of operation should it come to that. In the same vein, he's for hire in the private sector and the Underworld, so there is some risk, a natural consequence. He keeps a hard firewall between anybody hiring him and any of his sources, any of his stashes, and his actual identification. The most the buyer gets to know without aggressive action is 'I know people'.
13 ABE - Present Day.

Re: Garrett Mendal
Welcome again to Epics. I like what you have so far, but I'd really like to see the Original Trilogy part filled in a little more. You can still do that without limiting your Into the Past stories; some of us have done it. :]
