There it sat, at the end of that long docking claw, her key to freedom. It would take her far into Unknown Space, at least, what was unknown to her. She would take her fast little freighter, then, and she would leave and never return to the Planet again. She would leave it, and it would finally float in Unknown Space as she made her place in the wider galaxy.

“Obviously. You said it yourself, Yvies: Thayer isn’t in the city. Let’s just say that I want to crush the head of the serpent, before it can strike.”

“Mmm, and I was going the imagery of a serpent myself, that of a constrictor slowly crushing the life out of this nascent insurgent movement. My recommendation is that we pacify Salis D’aar first. After all, what would Admiral Dodonna say if you were rush headlong out into the rural areas, and there were to be an incident in the capital? It wouldn’t look good to the Admiral if we were not to secure our base of operations, especially after he’s built you up to be such a hero.”

It all depends on how it was reported to Dodonna. I’ll stab you in the back before you can do the same to me, Yvies. Rinehart flashed the Bakuran a cold smile. “Your concern for my welfare is touching. What sort of white terror do you have planned, Yvies?”

“It happens to be my ship.” The intruder turned around to face Jem.

“Oh frak…” Jem’s right forefinger and thumb raised to pinch the bridge of her nose. Her neck felt warm with embarrassment as she recognized the person, who she could now tell was female. “Sam Koortyn, right?”

“You’re the new mechanic for Corran’s squadron.” Sam and she stood there for a moment in front of an impervious Thera, sizing each other up mentally and carefully. Finally Sam nodded towards her ship behind her. “You didn’t touch her, did you?”

The Mandalorian stared at him for a moment, then cracked a smile. He held up his hand, and Gavin humbly took it. "I give you this, ner vod, you have nerve to approach me to train you. If the other Rogues have your kind of runi, they would make excellent warriors."

"Thank you, Ab–" The Mandalore snatched his other arm and tossed him across the floor, landing him on the mat.

Abiik began to laugh loudly. "Oh, vod'ika! You must not be so trustworthy! Know your opponent! Always watch your kama at all times! There is your first lesson in training, ge'verd!"

"Yes, Abiik…" Gavin looked at the ceiling and blinked. "Can I get up now?"

“It’s not that bad,” she said sincerely. She touched his arm, “Don’t get shot.”

“I won’t get shot.”

“We’re all getting through this one okay. I’m getting through this one okay,” her face grew more concerned and she reached hand down his arm, wrapped her hands around his and squeezed. “You make sure you come back from this one too.”

“I’m going to make it back from this one,” Leto smiled and squeezed hard back. “You be careful out there.”

Mischa let go of his hand and threw on that dangerous grin of hers. “Always am careful, Captain.” Her grin fell to a warm smile and she said quietly, “I’ve got something to come back to.”

“Some guys just can’t take a hint,” Jax said, “Let go of my ship…”

Jax opened the torpedo bay and half-fired, half-dropped the proton torpedo from it’s launcher. Caught in a tractor beam designed to pull objects many times its weight, it quickly accelerated, streaking directly towards the tractor beam. He could only imagine the chaos caused by the missile drawing ever closer to it’s target, but suddenly the tractor beam stopped, releasing the ship with a shudder.

“Let’s get out of here,” Banshee said, quickly accelerating away from the Victory-class.

Then she frowned; she missed the books she used to carry, reading them from time to time to pass the sleepless nights. She'd had six at one point, reading from each of them little by little, but had dropped them all a week ago. Now, she wished she'd kept at least one. Her books had helped her more in the past month than any attempt she'd made to defend against the infected. Why? Plain and simple: Thera Katal, MD, sucked at fighting zombies. But healing people? That was her forte. It was pretty much all she was good at right now, so she did it with gusto. Hell, she'd heal zombies if she thought it would help them.

"Tss" Weiss stated through smiling teeth as he dialed down the astromech volume to shut out RD-3 who was still chittering away. He then flicked on the squadron comm. "There's one." He said over the comm.

"Just one?" Pixy chimed in with a smile in his tone. "What're you tired?"

"I'm leading two over here." Ceryll's voice interrupted before Weiss could retort.. She was his wingman for this flight and the third redhead he'd met so far. Must be a squadron theme.

“Grey?” Morgan asked the lifeless, off-line mechanical eyes. She hoped the droid had not been too heavily damaged. “Grey?” She asked, louder. There was no response from the metal being.

“Grey, wake up.” She said, clawing more of the debris free. “Wake up. Wake up.” Morgan began to cry. The tears cut pathways through the caked dirt down her grimy face. Morgan was in pain, exhausted, hungry, dirty, desperate and had no way off this horrible planet except this dead droid. She slumped forward, her head hitting the droid with a soft thunk. After three hours of digging, the gambler had no more to give. She sobbed softly, laying prone over her broken metal ticket off the planet.

“He’s not my responsibility,” Iris shrugged.

Leon reached for his knife. “I could just-”

“Go make yourself useful!” Iris quickly interrupted him and watched him leave the kitchen with amused eyes.

“Kind of bloodthirsty today, isn’t he?” Rissa observed. “He probably didn’t play well with other kids when he was a child.”

“It’s almost like a pet.” Kara murmured.

“Actually they do become that way for some.” Antilles said, hearing her. “They make damn good co-pilots too.” He was thinking about Whistler, worried that the Colonials might have done something to him in retaliation and fear after the droid had given one of their crewmen a mild zap back in the hangar. Not realizing he was just being protective.

“Imperial pilots need no such…assistance.” Captain Dunn added with that same superior smirk that Vac began to consider his default expression.

Wearing a smirk of her own, this one more of the smartassed variety, Mischa replied, “It’d be a shame to waste perfectly good astromechs on expendable flyboys and their disposable ships anyway.” The remark elicited a grin from Corran and another shake of the head from Tariq, but his own grin was just as wide.

"But I never intended them to be used on civilians." Dunn shot back.

"And that is why you never became a soldier, Tyrell," the Captain explained. "Once we joined the academy, we both went our seperate ways. I became a military tactician and you became a design specialist in our TIE program. We both show great promise but you wanted to engineer, while I…" He left the statement unfinished.

"You became a military man and eventually, we both married," Tyrell continued, "and now here we both are with someone to look forward to seeing back home."

"Yes, and I miss her." Dodonna breathed. "I never meant to become a monster, Tyrell. I'm merely just following orders."

"Yes," Tyrell said, almost tripping over the words. "War becomes the worst of us."

He continued to beg. “Please… what do you want from me?! We are in a place of business.”

Jono locked the door from the inside and calmly turned to the sniveling man on the floor. “What the hell have you done, Olee. What have you told them?”

Suddenly, the fear disappeared from Olee. Rising to his knees, he finally looked at his assailant and realized who it was. Olee’s face changed from that of fear, to excitement and then back to certain fear again. "Heh… Jono…. What are you doing here? I thought—"

The salve stung and tore at her skin as she slapped it on, but she ignored the pain, angry eyes focused on the mirror. There would be no scars, thanks to the specially-made medication for her specially-altered skin, but for now the burns on her face were ugly. Fingers paused as they ran over the scar in her right cheek. That was from the one wound she had never treated. Too angry and bitter to even bother with wiping the blood away, she had let it heal in its own time, and now it served her as a reminder of the last time anyone had ever helped her. The last time she had really, truly felt.

‘Now… we still gotta see your IDs.’

Seon nodded. Gawkily, he pulled out a datapad and held it out to the speaker; who glanced through, swallowed, then passed it without a word. So did his neighbour. And hers. Apprehensive, number four studied. Eyes wide, his glance jerked round about, then back to the squad leader. ‘We can’t. They’d fetch our families.’

‘We’ll give them a lot else to worry.’

One of the techs cleared his throat. From the corner of his eye, Matheron noticed the move on the wall-mounted screen: six walked upon the travelator – four black, two grey. Marrjo’s hand inched closer to the blaster; the guards pulled. ‘Sorry. But we can’t…’

Pale and shivering, Seon stepped between the muzzles.

‘When the Imperials fetched the non-human, I kept silent: I was a human.
When they locked up the Republicans, I kept silent: why, I was none.
When they fetched the labour unionists, I kept still; sure I missed my father—
When they came to fetch me… I stood alone.’

His whisper fading, the youth stepped through their cordon…

‘What distressed Gavin though, was the squadron’s inability to carry out a strategic bombing offensive against the NR forces, an assault that could relieve the pressure on the Kamiakian militias considerably. Despite his cajoling, there were no pilots willing to fly the U-33s on bombing raids, so Gavin flew the occasional mission himself. Admittedly, he had to concede that the other pilots had a point; the raids were a harrowing affair: A low level approach followed by a sudden pop up to fling ordnance at the target in a ship never designed for such a mission, then the mad dash for safety, sometimes at treetop level. After his last raid on an NR supply depot, Gavin had been tempted to find relief in the mind and body numbing embrace of ohayou.

Jerva smiled coldly and pulled his blaster. “Now might be a good time to duck,” he matter-of-factly said, firing off a bolt in the general direction of their newly arrived friends, and then quickly ducking out of sight behind a table.

Their return fire peppered the walls around the stairway, causing the mercenaries crowding the stairs to deploy into the main portion of the bar. Spreading into a skirmish formation and opening fire on their counterparts that they thought had shot at them.

Jerva holstered his blaster and then he and Aray ran for the stairs, easily passing through the skirmish line of mercenaries advancing into the bar. They snuck up the stairs, and into an alcove where a brown haired man holstered a blaster when he noticed their arrival, and Jerva nodded at him, recognizing Jono.

Jono gestured at the firefight. “I hope you have a plan for getting us out of here.”

“They’re not going to keep shooting at each other forever,” Aray observed. “We need to find John.”

“Some people,” he muttered under his breath, rolling his eyes.

“Let me guess, we’re going to be leading the attack.”

The Intelligence Officer did not speak, a reaction that gave Zak all the information he needed. The Loyalist leaders were using the Imperial pilots at every opportunity. While Cipher despised that fact, he still had a job to do. After all, the planet’s food resources could provide the Imperial fleet with much needed provisions. “Fine, but I want all forces under my direct command. I do not want to go through AWACS to get clearance for anything.”

For a few moments the Loyalist officer did not move, but eventually nodded his head in an affirmative response. “Fine, you will be in direct command of the attack force.”

Just because he received, the answer he wanted did not mean Zak was happy. As far as he was concerned, this mission was truly suicide. He rose from the seat and left the room, searching for Lane. She deserved to know what they would be facing.

Traven turned his eyes back to the dance floor. “Apropos spies: Is it just me or does this Miss von Aath scream ISB? Admiral Dodonna mentioned to me before the mission, that it is very likely that Bastion will send an operative from the Bureau.” Daiman followed his cousin’s gaze, smirking. “I think that Mr. Bal’ak is hoping she’ll scream something else later.” He started to chuckle as he saw the shocked look, Traven gave him. “Sometimes you act like a monk, Trave. Maybe you need another drink to loosen up?” Daiman pointed to Traven’s now empty glass.

"And what of the Jedi prisoners? They may sway the tide of battle," Darin noted.

"Irrelevent!" Sythis spat in defiance of the statement. "You have forgotten that Cryxes is out there hunting them down as we speak. By the time the Jedi find them, they will be dead at the hands of the Anzati and he will be drinking the last of their soup."

Darin added, "Hopefully, Cryxes will lower their numbers by the time you arrive."

"That would be most advantageous," Sythis whispered, drawing a wicked grin from everyone.

As if on cue, one of the Dark Lord's servants approached from the communications wing. "My Lord, good news. One of the flagships of the New Republic has suffered great casualties. It's main hangar has been destroyed. There is no way their starfighters can now land."

"Ah, my servant Jelt has served me well. She has sabotaged the Rogue Squadron unit for good. Now it is only a matter of time when Sivan will wipe out the rest." A sneer formed on his lips. "The Rogues will die… as well as Ceveir here on the surface."

"Shall I contact Jelt and issue any orders from you?" the servant asked.

There was a pause as they each surveyed the map. The Dark Lord broke the silence. "Let her remain hidden amongst them for now. She serves me better when she is not known. I will be in contact with her soon when the battle has ended."

He smiled. "But now, we will gather our troops and leave." He eyed Scira. "My apprentice, be at my side as we ride into battle!"
