I feel bad for the families who lost somebody that day and are always remembered of the loss in big style every year.

The world's finest:
The United States Marine Corps
The New York Fire Department

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

From the halls of Montezuma To the shores of Tripoli,
We fight our countrys battles In the air, on land, and sea,
First to fight for right and freedom , And to keep our honor clean,
We are proud to claim the title Of United States Marines.

I was an Air Traffic Controller at Barksdale AFB in Shreveport Louisiana working that morning. As we went on high alert things got even crazier when we learned Air Force One was diverted to the base. I didn't see much of what was happening live in New York but for me it was a very wild and surreal day. I couldn't believe I was right in the middle of what was going on, I was nervous, the F-16's that escorted Air Force One in constantly patrolled our air space and it was up to me to provide them information on all unidentified aircraft within 250miles. As you can imagine there were quite a few. Even the week following 9/11 was unreal, I was on a rapid deployment team that left the Friday after it all happened.

This is a day all Americans should never forget, never forget what happened to us or the need for us to protect everything we hold dear and sacred in this country. I know I will never forget the images of the towers falling or the images of our enemies dancing in the street celebrating the deaths of my fellow Americans.

Even though I'm a civilian now I still salute my brothers in arms who fight for our freedom to this day.

Surreal is the right word, Qardin. I saw it on TV and couldn't believe it was real. Didn't want to. A big enough part of me still refuses to accept what may not be: That there actually are men blind enough to plan and bring this and similar atrocities upon their fellowmen -- without being in a position of acute need and oppression.

Unfortunately my non-acceptance can't resurrect the victims; as can't war--that overmore will not eradicate the fanatics, nor convince them against. In the long term the only way out of this vicious cycle of fear & aggression is to strengthen the resonable and come to international understanding.

Which sadly will never happen.

They will never be convinced but the message was sent lout and clear, we will never allow actions like that to go unpunished.

I agree it'll likely take another while.

However, with time, rebellion and good sense the segregation of the sexes, racial discrimination and the Cold War, too, have been overcome. More or less. So there's still hope.

I remember I was getting ready for school that morning and I walked into the living room, where my mother was watching TV, crying. One of the buildings in New York was on fire or something, apparently a plane had hit it. I watched the second plane hit, like a bucket of cold water in the face. And then the first tower fell.

I didn't know what was going on, I didn't know what to make of it. Even today, I still really don't. I'm not sure I really want to.

I can still remember when it happened like it was yesterday even though it was eight years ago. I had stayed home from school for some unknown reason and my Mom woke me up saying "You have to come and see this."

So I woke up and walked out to the living room still half asleep and saw a plane sticking out of the World Trade Center. At this point, everyone assumed it was some horrible accident. As I was watching, I noticed another plane swoop down toward the tower. My Mom was on the phone with my grandmother at the time, and I remember saying "They just sent in a Fire plane to put out the fire...... Ooh my god, the fire plane hit the other tower!"

My Mom dropped the phone and stared in awe, and it only took me a split second to realize that it wasn't an accident compounded by another accident. It was an actual attack.

Later that day, I remember watching as the towers burned. A group of firefighters (CNN said about 300+ at the time) were gathered outside of the building below. I remember the Captain saying that they had to get everyone out as quickly as possible, and the high spirited firefighters ran into the building. About 3 minutes later, it collapsed.... and none of them ever ran out.

I was a Junior in High School.
